Tattoos and Regrets: Is It Really That Common?
Despite what your parents or grandparents might say, most people with tattoos don’t regret them at all.
Recent YouGov surveys show that around 26% of people in the UK have tattoos. Of those, 11% have visible ones in places like the neck, forearms, wrists, hands or even the face. But how many actually wish they hadn’t gone under the needle? Only 14% say they have any regrets. That means the vast majority are still totally happy with their ink.
Millennials lead the way as the most tattooed generation, with 47% having at least one design. Gen X isn’t far behind at 32%.
That said, regret does exist. A 2012 survey from the British Association of Dermatologists found that nearly a third of tattooed people had second thoughts. Men, especially those who got inked before 16, were more likely to regret it.
So, what causes tattoo regret?
Here are the most common reasons:
- Tastes change over time
- The tattoo didn’t age well, with faded ink or shaky lines
- The meaning no longer feels the same
- It was an impulsive decision, sometimes fuelled by alcohol
Some of the most regretted tattoos? Names of exes, dolphins and misspelt foreign quotes are right up there.
